A little Alaska geography

When you look at an Alaskan map like this, it really doesn't make an impression on you.

When you see it like this, perhaps it makes a bigger impression.  Yeah, I know, bad pun.

Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas, but with a population of only about 700,000 people. That amounts to a lot of unpopulated state.
And if you don't have a lot of people, you don't need many roads.  This is a map of the Alaska Highway system.  It does not include the Alaska Marine Highway.  In fact, so many communities in Alaska are isolated that about 100 of them don't require a vehicle to be registered.

Just like every other place in the world, there are multiple weather patterns within Alaska.  However, given the size of the state the differences within the state can be equally as vast.

One thing I can say with certainty is that almost the whole state has had one factor in common.  COLD!  This past week we had a storm come in and bring us 80 mph winds, coupled with our cold temps we had wind chills of -35 and even colder.  After the winds died down, the cold remained so when I woke up on Saturday is was -12, and that was without a windchill.  However, I really hate to complain to much sometimes.  Parts of the state have been experiencing -35 as their high daily temperature.
